At least nine dead at Berlin Christmas Market

769337519.12.2016 BERLIN. A truck raced into a Christmas Market at the “Gedächtniskirche” (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church) in Berlin, killing at least nine persons and injuring at least 50, some of them critically.

On Monday evening, a truck plowed into a Berlin Christmas Market in what police are calling an attack.  Nine deaths have been confirmed and at least 50 are injured, some with life threatening injuries.  Police also confirmed that they have arrested a suspect.

On Twitter, police reported that a truck had driven over a sidewalk on Breitscheidplatz and that there were injured persons.  A live video on the Facebook site of the “Berliner Morgenpost” showed damaged stands at the “Gedächtniskurche” Christmas Market.  Many police cars are at the scene.

A dpa (German Press Agency) photographer reported seeing many police with machine guns at the Löwentor (Lions door) at the Zoo. The driver had fled in the direction of the zoo.

Berlin’s Mayor, Michael Müller said, “What we are seeing here is dramatic.”  He said his thoughts were with the families of the dead and injured.
